The Hereford-based group of makers, Alloy
Jewellers, came to me
when their co-operative spirit and organisation won them a grant to
help promote and develop their group.
Photography by
Ward was
very pleased to be invited to carry out this intensive on-site
photographic shoot. Initial communications took place over the
phone and
e-mail
with Becky Lewis who was co-ordinating the photographic session on
behalf
of both herself, as a maker, and the others in the Alloy group. From
there a detailed brief and programme was worked out. Whilst the images
would be primarly for the Alloy website the photographs would be
produced to the highest technical quality and to a high resolution
giving each maker the opportunity to have a great set of product images
for their own personal use in marketing and promotion.
Travelling to
the group's
centre of activity in Hereford's vibrant art centre, The
Courtyard,
Dave Ward established a temporary studio there which was
fully
equipped
and ready to capture the range and variety of fantastic pieces
presented for photography. Over the next three days in a well
co-ordinated operation twenty very talented individuals trotted along
one after the other to work with Dave in a collaborative way
and
art direct photography for their own work. From this activity each
maker helped to create a set of photographs which they felt would
capture the unique nature and substance of their individual work but in
such a way as to give the Alloy group as a whole a good common visual
identity.
After this
intense three
days, helped greatly by the excellent ambience of The Courtyard venue
(and its cappuccinos), Dave returned to his own studio in Cumbria and
set about the post photography phase of the project. Each maker was
invited to select a definitive portfolio from the bigger range of
photographs taken and thereater the final phase was actioned - a
detailed and careful editing, checking and retouching and cutting out
of the images for 160 jewellery photographs arising
from the shoot. Finally with the work complete the Alloy group have a
fantastic set of photographs to use in their promotional
activities with each artist now able to be represented in an equally
fair
way.
The images on this page are a small selection of the photographs taken
and listed below are the names of the makers of Alloy who took part in
